Alpe d'Huez is a busy year round resort, and thanks to the Pic Blanc glacier, this is one resort where you can actually ski during the summer.

As always, if you're coming early or late in the season, there's a chance not all the lifts will be open. Before you book your accommodation, read on to find out when we think it's best to come to Alpe d'Huez.

Winter ski season dates in Alpe d'Huez

The ski season in Alpe d'Huez typically runs from early December to mid-April. This winter, lifts open on 2 December 2023 and close on 21 April 2024.

The best time to come depends on what you like to do on holiday, and what's happening with the weather.

Late February is probably the sweet spot for most people. The snow base is normally well-established by then, and temperatures are starting to rise.

The downside is that most of February is half-term, so the slopes tend to be busiest then.

Skiing in Alpe d'Huez in November

Can you ski in November? It all depends on the weather. It's often still too warm.

If you’re prepared to put in the leg work, there’s nothing to stop you going into the mountains at any time of course. But you'll normally need to skin up on touring skis or a splitboard.

Late-season skiing in Alpe d'Huez

Much of Alpe d'Huez is south facing, which is perfect for sun worshippers but not so great if you're planning a late-season trip.

If you know where to look, you can find some northerly-facing slopes where snow tends to hang around longer. And of course, Alpe d'Huez has one of the highest skiable glaciers in Europe.

If you come later in the season, our advice is to get up early and get up high.

It's worth remembering that strong winds, dangerous snow conditions and other adverse weather can affect when the lifts run. If you're in resort, make sure you check our live lift status page for up-to-date information on lift closures.
