Alpe d'Huez's very own Gauthier de Tessieres has won an unexpected silver medal in the Men's Super G event at the World Ski Championships in Schladming, Austria.

Gauthier was not even supposed to be in the start gate but won a late call up to the French squad after the injury prevented the record breaking Johan Clarey from taking part.

Gauthier finished just 0.20 seconds behind winner American Ted Ligety and 0.02 ahead of Olympic champion Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway who came in third.

"It's difficult to analyse," said De Tessieres after the race. "Five days ago they called me to say I was not qualified."
"Now I'm here. I've had no time to think," he added. "My coach told me it was destiny."
