Fresh snow and sunshine, perfect for the weekend!

Lovely sunny days followed by a snowfall

featured in Snow report Author Rob Wood, Alpe d'Huez Reporter Updated

As predicted in our 7-day detailed weather forecast, we had some nice fresh snow on Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The snow came thanks to the cold front that moved slowly across Central Europe in the early part of the week which took the freeze height down to around 800 metres, ensuring that the snow that fell was nice, light and powdery.

With snow falling down to an elevation of around 800/900 metres, every slope within the Grand Domaine ski area received some nice fresh snow. Around 20cm fell in resort, at 1850 metres, and 30cm up on the higher slopes, at 3300 metres. It has really set things up perfectly for the weekend ahead! Temperatures are cold at the moment which is great news for the snow condition, with daytime “highs” of -5ºC in resort today (1850 metres) and a bitingly cold -15ºC up at the top of the Pic Blanc (3300 metres).

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were lovely sunny days in Alpe d'Huez. The snow clouds arrived as the sun went down on Wednesday. Avalanche risk had dropped to 2 out of 5 (moderate) across the whole of ski area but, after Wednesday night's snowfall, it's risen back up to 3 out 5 (considerable) across the whole of the Grande Domaine ski area. However, with no snow in the forecast for the next few days, it should go down over the next day or two. In the meantime, and as is always the case after snowfall, be careful and don’t be a hero!

On-piste snow cover now stands at:

  • Alpe d’Huez resort (1850m) - 208cm
  • Pic Blanc (3300m) - 325cm
  • Auris village (1650m) - 208cm
  • Auris Signal (2176m) - 210cm
  • Villard Reculas (1500m) - 208cm
  • Vaujany (1250m) - 70cm
  • Oz-en Oisans (1350m) - 90cm
  • Montfrais (1650m) - 120cm
  • Dome des Rousses (2800m) - 210cm

Off-piste cover now stands at:

  • 2500m: North - 330cm, south - 300cm
  • 2000m: North - 225cm, south - 180cm
  • 1500m: North - 120cm, south - 70cm
  • 1000m: North - 5cm, south - 5cm

Over 2m at resort level is a very rare depth to achieve and hasn’t been the case for quite a few seasons. This in addition to more than 3m up at 3300 metres, it really does make for great ski conditions across the whole of the ski area. And, with good snow cover down to low elevations, even the very lowest of runs at around 1500 metres are in good nick. So it’s not all about getting up really high to get great conditions this season.

With the arrival of February, we today have 62 lifts open in the whole ski area (out of 68 = 91%). Of these, 26 are in Alpe d’Huez itself (out of 30 = 87%). They serve 99 pistes across the whole ski area (out of 103 = 96%) and, of these, 39 are in Alpe d’Huez (out of 44 = 89%). Of these 99 pistes, 27 are green, 31 are blue, 27 are red and 14 are black. So there really is something for everybody with plenty of choice.

As has been the case for past week or so, we have a 100% of the cross-country ski trails open, with 39km of lovely groomed trails now available. In addition to these, there are 36km of walking trails open (out of 37km = 97%). If you fancy a day away from the slopes, a walk on the trails is a lovely way to spend a few hours. The trail up the Lac Besson is particularly nice and has some stunning views along the way, the restaurant up at the lake really is a gem!

The days continue to lengthen here in resort as we race towards spring. Sunrise this morning was at 07:57 and, with sunset at 17:40, we get 9 hours and 33 minutes of daylight today. This is really making a difference, particularly at the end of the day as the “stretch” is really noticeable.

Bon weekend!
