Where to watch 6 nations rugby in Alpe d'Huez

Your guide to avoiding the “scrum” as you “try” and watch all the action

featured in Events reviews Author Rob Wood, Alpe d'Huez Reporter Updated

Just because you are on your holidays here in resort it doesn’t mean you will have to miss a minute of the thrilling action of this year’s eagerly awaited RBS 6 Nations Championships, which gets underway on Saturday 4th February.

Last years’ winners, and a resurgent England under the wily guidance of Eddie Jones, start as strong favourites (10/11 favourites with Paddy Power), whilst an improving Ireland will be buoyed by the recent win over the World Champions New Zealand in America.  And an always strong Wales team will be looking to captain Sam Warburton to propel them to their first 6 Nations Championship since 2013.

It will prove a difficult task for Scotland to secure their first championship since way back in 1999, but under the guidance of Vern Cotter and the captaincy of Greigor Laidlaw they will be optimistic.

The French challenge will be led by skipper Guilhem Guirado, but it’s hard to see them finishing above England, Wales or Ireland. They will be hopeful of their first successful 6 nations championship since 2010.

Italy, with Irish coach Conor O’Shea at the helm, will be keen to avoid the wooden spoon for finishing last and it may come down to the final round of matches and Scotland v Italy at Murrayfield to determine the unfortunate “winner”.

Meanwhile the 6 Nations Championship itself, and possible Grand Slam, may well all come down to the very last match. The clash of the titans of Ireland v England in Dublin, where the Irish will look to make the most of their home advantage and vociferous support

It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the final table mirror that of the current world rankings, with England being the highest ranked of the Northern Hemisphere sides, currently world number 2, topping the table. Here’s my final table prediction:

  1. England
  2. Ireland
  3. Wales
  4. Scotland
  5. France
  6. Italy

As with all the main sporting events there are always plenty of places to catch the games here in resort. Down in the old town area - O Bar and L’Indiana Bar are always popular and both offer good food as well as big screen TVs. In the middle of town Smithys Tavern always has a good atmosphere with 2 massive TVs and great offers on jugs of beer. Up in the main street area (Avenue Les Jeux) – O’Sharkeys Bar opens all day on Saturday and Sunday and offers a pool table and dart board as well as a large TV.

If you fancy catching the games in some Gallic company, then why not try the Freeride Bar and Sphere Bar (both on the main street) or the Tiger Bar down in the Les Bergers commercial area – all are French run bars and always show the live sport.

The action starts on Saturday 4th February and concludes on Saturday 18th March. The games are (all times are LOCAL – CET)
