Smithy's Tavern restaurant review

Monday night burgers are mouth wateringly good

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Rob Wood, Alpe d'Huez Reporter Updated

Never before have burgers been so popular and in vogue, with dedicated burger restaurants now a familiar sight in every town in the United Kingdom, and there's no need to miss out on a burger when you are here in Alpe d'Huez.

Smithy's Tavern in the middle of town (just below the ice rink) above the Igloo Nightclub, holds a “Burger Night” every Monday throughout the season and they really are top burgers.

Served between 6pm and 11pm every Monday, you can easily grab one after an apres-ski drink before heading home or alternatively have one as part of your night out here in resort, the choice is yours.

They are always homemade on the day, cooked to order and they really are truly mouth watering. The burger menu offers a great choice, with a wide range of beef burgers, chicken burgers, veggie burgers and pulled pork as well. Starters include onion rings, garlic bread, nachos and chicken wings – from 4€. All the burgers are priced at a reasonable 12€ - with additional toppings able to be added for 1 and 2€.

I ordered the Cajun Chicken burger with all the trimmings with sweet potato wedges (having just been to the gym I was trying to be healthy!) My 16 year old son, who is in resort for the school half term holiday in the UK, ordered the Beef Burger “Texan” – again with sweet potato wedges.

The burgers are a proper mouth-full and I decided to attack mine in two halves, rather than make a mess in public. My son's was a gloriously messy affair, lashings of cheese, onion rings and bacon – he really could have done with a bib!

With it being the school half term holidays in both the UK and here in France it was quite busy, but we managed to grab a table for 2 with no problems. It's wiser for bigger groups to book in advance as its always busy here, regardless of school holidays.

We only had to wait around 15/20minutes for our freshly cooked food to arrive, just enough time to catch up on a few emails and make a FaceTime call on the free (and very reliable) WiFi in the bar.

The food was served on very cool wooden skillet type plates with the wedges served in small steel “buckets” – really nicely presented. The burgers also come with a generous helping of homemade “slaw” as well, and this was lovely. Although we chose the sweet potato wedges, you can alternatively have chunky chips or skinny fries, the choice is yours.

Likewise if you don't fancy your burger in a bun, you can always “go naked” or “topless” – this refers to the bun of course! – but we were starving after a day on the slopes and a couple of hours in the gym to follow.

The burgers were really great and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone – and if someone in your group isn't in the mood for a burger, the restaurants “normal”menu is available as well – this includes steaks, chillis and fajitas – so there's plenty of choice.

As a treat we shared a delicious dessert as well- we had the Homemade Red Fruits and white chocolate crumble with vanilla ice cream- which was to die for!!! There was plenty of dessert choice and an ice cream menu that includes 18 different flavours of ice cream and 5 sorbets, with plenty of different toppings should you so fancy.

All in all a great couple of burgers and a desert to share for 29€, which I think represents pretty good value – and I will no doubt be back again in the very near future.
