New Year torchlit descent in Alpe d'Huez

Fantastic early evening entertainment on Friday

The New Year celebrations got started here on Friday evening at 6pm with a fantastic torchlight descent by the ski instructors of the ESF ski school.

From a great vantage point at the bottom of the Marmottes1 lift/Les Bergers area you could clearly see the red torches amassing up at La Folie Douce perched way up in the night ski at the Marmottes1 lift station.

Unlike last year’s fog affected spectacle, this year was blessed with clear skis and “mildish” temperatures, and the descent started at 6pm with Red Arrow like synchronicity. The large expectant crowd was then treated to wonderful torchlight descent by over 100 ski instructors weaving their way down towards Les Bergers in perfect formation.

The descent was swiftly followed by an amazing fire eating and juggling act, “Lokoko”, these 2 guys were absolutely amazing and the large crowd were truly wowed by these great performers.

And the early evening festivities were concluded by a wonderful firework display from the slopes above Les Bergers. As always in Alpe d’Huez the fireworks were both fantastic and well supported. The torchlight descents are one of the highlights of the entertainments calendar here in resort and there are more planned for the half term holidays in February, so don’t miss out if you are here, keep an eye on our entertainments guides for further details.
