Le Trappeur restaurant review

Popular restaurant serving the best burgers in town

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Rob Wood, Alpe d'Huez Reporter Updated

The popularity of burgers is at an all-time high and Le Trappeur really takes burgers to new heights. Now in its third season its popularity is increasing year-on-year.

Burgers and in particular gourmet burgers have been increasing in popularity for the last few years and that’s a trend that hasn’t been lost on Alpe d’Huez and I think it fair to say the best burgers in resort are those of chef Mattieu Tremolieres and his Le Trappeur Restaurant.

Le Trappeur is located up by the DMC lift station at the top end of town on Avenue du Rif Nel and although it’s fairly basic and “café” style in its décor it’s definitely high-end on quality. It’s located on the left hand side as you go up to the lift station by the “retractable” road bollard.

Le Trappeur restaurant review exterior

Having been cross-country skiing all day I really was starving and homemade burger with homemade fries was right at the top of my list, so off to Le Trappeur we went. As I say it’s not fancy décor wise, but don’t let that put you off, if you are craving a burger then this is the place for you. It’s got a surf-skate-chic style to the interior and the music further adds to this. The coat hangers are skate board wheel chucks! Really cool.

The menu has 14 different burgers (12x beef burgers and 2x chicken burgers) and you can get a couple of salads if you fancy, but let’s be fair this place is all about burgers. The burger menu is truly mouth-watering and the house speciality is the Jack Daniels burger (150g burger, a shot of “Jack”, 3 rashers of bacon, a hash brown, salad, onions and barbecue sauce!). All of the burgers are available as singles, doubles and a not for the faint hearted triple burger.

Le Trappeur restaurant review style of cuisine

After much deliberation and counter-deliberation I ordered a double bacon burger with homemade fries, whilst my son Harrison chose a double chicken burger again with homemade fries, with a bottle of Budweiser and a coke to wash it down as well.

OMG what a burger!, epic would not be a word wasted on the burgers of Le Trappeur. They were both enormous and full of flavour, the quality of the ingredients was easy to see and taste. I really have to say that this is probably the best burger I have ever tasted – no word of a lie.

Every element of the burger was delicious from the brioche style bun, the salad, the bacon, the cheese, the homemade fries, the “slaw” and best of all the burgers were truly magnificent. The homemade fries are absolutely gorgeous to boot.

Le Trappeur restaurant review interior

If you are hungry a single burger is for you, if you are absolutely “hank marvin” then it’s a double and as for the triple burger I guess a stint on a desert island may be the necessary pre-cursor. You can get a dessert, but I can’t imagine you would have the room!, even Harrison (aka the human woodchipper) couldn’t manage a dessert, that just about says it all really!

The restaurant has seating for around 35 people inside with further seating outside. It’s a regular haunt for the instructors of ESF ski school and the fact there are always a few ski instructors here is further testament as to its quality, there was a table of 8 ESF ski instructors next to us.

Its open from 10am to 3pm for lunch and then again from 6pm to 10pm in the evening and you can even get your burgers delivered to your chalet as well, with free home delivery between 6pm and 10pm.

The burgers range from €13 for a single cheese burger and homemade fries up to €21 for a triple “Jack” burger and fries. Soft drinks are €3, Budweiser €4 and Brooklyn IPA €6.

We had a double chicken burger, double bacon burger, 2x cokes and 2x Buds for €47, which is pretty comparable with other burgers in town, but for me its without doubt the best burger in resort. Don’t just take my word for it – but make sure you go in hungry!
