Le Spot Restaurant Review

There really is no better “spot” to have lunch on the mountain

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Rob Wood, Alpe d'Huez Reporter Updated

Although only small and with no inside seating “Le Spot” mountain restaurant really is my favourite place to eat up on the hill. It's sunny a lot of the time here in Alpe d’Huez so dining al-fresco is the only way to eat up on the mountain.

Run by local “face” and all round lovely guy Martin (previous owner of the Zoo Bar in resort) Le Spot offers a great selection of baguettes, paninis, burgers, chips and it's speciality of Indonesian rice “Nasi-Goring”.

The music is always really cool, never so loud as to be annoying, but loud enough to create a great vibe and atmosphere. The views from Le Spot are absolutely fantastic as well; from above Les Bergers you can see all of the town and across to the slopes of Auris-en-Oisans and even to Les Deux Alpes in the far distance.

It's located just below the Les Romains and Marmottes1 lifts (from Les Bergers) and basically all you need to do is head towards the mid-station DMC from these lifts and look for the banners and you will find this tiny gem. It is tucked away though, but well worth finding. It's basically on the cross roads of the green pistes Agneaux and Lac Blanc, it's not located next to the slope it literally is on the slope!

Given that it doesn't have any indoor seating it is a bit of a fair weather hot-spot and on sunny days it is rammed, with a great mix of locals and tourists alike. As its on a fairly simple “loop” from Marmottes1/Les Romains lift – if it's really busy when you ski past, simply do another loop and hopefully you will be able to grab a deck chair on the next pass by. It's used by most of the SATASKI lifties and mountain rescue guys which is always a good sign, when the locals in the know use it.

Panini's and baguettes start at 6.50€, whilst burgers start at 8€. The truly delicious Nasi-Goring rice starts at 8.50€ - as is great value, as you do get a pretty big “tub” of rice, chicken and vegetables, all topped off with some nuts and chillies if you fancy.

Today I went for a ham and cheese baguette and a can of Coke, and it came to 9.50€ about right for eating in such great surroundings up on the hill. It was truly lovely and there is no better setting in the whole of resort on a sunny day. But basically having eaten everything on the menu, I can genuinely confirm it's all lovely.

There is a small decked area with quite a few deck-chairs, but this isn’t one of those huge commercial places with hundreds of deck chairs. They also cut seats into the snow around the restaurant and drape these with sheep skin rugs to keep your bum off the cold snow!

Once you are in your deck chair in the sun it really is a chore to drag yourself away and its all too easy to sit here for a couple of hours and just chill out.
