Chicken Roll Cafe Review

Simple, quick and very reasonable!

Located right in the heart of Alpe d’Huez, on Avenue Les Jeux (the Main Street), opposite the ice rink, is the café restaurant/take away – Chicken Roll.

If you simply want a quick pizza, burger, wrap or some chicken wings then this place is ideal. I popped in last Friday after the gym in order to grab a quick pizza to take away and eat at home – a rare treat after a hard work-out, I was taking full advantage of the mythical metabolic window!

Being able to park right outside was a big plus point for me as I was driving, there are plenty of parking spaces up and down the Main Street.

Although I used it as a take away there is “Café style” seating for 20 people inside and around same number outside if you want to grab a lunch and sit outside and watch the world go by. It's on the “sunny-side” of the Main Street, so the outside seating takes full advantage of this. The restaurant is run by a local French husband and wife combo.

I ordered the pizza Reine (tomato, mushroom, ham and cheese) for 10€50 and after around only 5 minutes the pizza duly arrived ready for me to take home – and I have to say it was genuinely lovely and great value. A really nice thin base, crispy edges and plenty of toppings.

Prices are very reasonable, pizzas 9€30 to 11€90, burgers from €4, chicken from 4€80, salads from 6€80, chips 2€90, water 1€80, soft drinks 2€50, beer 3€ and wine 3€50 – so you definitely wont break the bank here.

“Meal deals” range in price from 9€40 to 11€60, which is pretty good value for a main, fries and drink. Alternatively you can get a healthy lasagne for 6€. There are also children’s options – so although a fairly simple menu, it does offer something for everyone.

And if you order 3 pizzas to take away you get a free bottle of wine!.

Whilst quite “simple”in its décor, a few funky murals adorn the walls – and unsurprisingly depict chickens - its very clean and friendly and if you are in a rush or just want something cheap and cheerful then you can't go far wrong here.

Its open from 10am to 10pm, so unfortunately no good for the real late night munchies – however if you are off the slopes early or having a day away from the slopes, then I would thoroughly recommend this place. It's open during the winter and summer seasons, but is closed during “inter-season”.

It also sells Haagen Dazs and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and you can get a crepe, if you fancy a dessert.

A good marker for this place is that it is always fairly busy, with a wide and varied clientele – groups, families and couples all frequent here – although its not the sort of place to go for a romantic valentines meal – but for a reasonably priced pizza or burger then I would recommend this place and I will no doubt being going back.
