Alpe d'Huez Apres Ski Report: 11st March 2009

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Alpe d'Huez Editor Updated

Apologies for the late upload of this report...I have had trouble getting it live, but I hope now it is up it's worth the wait! It's snowing again, very heavily. This season has been even better than last season on the snow front - which was hard to top... and the drinkers of resort have taken full advantage of those hefty white out days with big nights out followed by long days in bed recovering (well, us seasonnaires have anyway!)...

Monday last week was, yes you've guessed it, the weekly bar crawl... which started off quietly and gained more and more stragglers on the way to result in one of the messiest of the season. It's always the way...whenever there is a week or two where the resort isn't as busy numbers wise, those who are here make twice as much effort to get...how shall I put it.... hammered! Half full bars where everyone in them is trolleyed always ends up being rather humorous. For those watching anyway! DJ Sam rounded the night off with those banging party anthems in Smithy's for those who can remember!

Tuesday was a good night to be in Lounge 21. The stylish modern cocktail bar laid on the return of 'Wine Tasting with resident expert Zippy' which went down a storm. Fine wine, a few Mojitos and a late night Hip Hop DJ was the perfect way to spend a chilly evening in March in Alpe D'Huez. Those wanting more of a drinking session made their way to the Underground with live music from Gaz and Hands, O'Sharkey's for a very popular karaoke night, or Smithy's for DJ Northey and his range of classic 90's dance anthems. Shell suits on, centre partings brushed...it was back to the 90's! (Was that really a decade ago? and I'm only 23!)

Wednesday brought some sun and sand to resort with the Smithy's 'Beach Party'... Always a good idea at the time, apart from the walking to and from in the snow dressed like David Hasselhoff (Who... little pointless fact for you here...can't actually swim in real life! Who would have thought eh?!). The Crystal hotels the Hermitage and the Valley Blanche guests and staff alike piled down in beach wear... good effort guys, great night! Sphere has 'Still Nameless' banging out their newest learned songs to fantastic applause...including Oasis' classic 'Songbird'. What a tune and brilliantly represented boys!

Thursday was a big night. Oh boy what a big night. Standard practice now meant straight down to O'Bar for 2 for 1 cocktails (every week from 10pm to 12am), Up to the Etalon for some lovely but strong flavoured rum! and on to Smithy's for an outstanding performance from Dr. Bruce! Probably the best I've ever seen them. Great gig, great crowd, great night! They play every other week in Smithy's, so if you are around next week be sure to check them out again!

Friday...was it really Friday already?! these weeks really are flying by at an alarming rate. April next month and home time....No no no, stop! Anyway... Friday saw a cracking après scene at Sphere Bar with Stevie B and his gui-tar! Back from a few months in the Wilderness in Deux Alps, he's back with a bang! Keep it up Stevie! You can catch him next week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at Sphere from 5pm... Otherwise Friday night was a quiet night, made busy by a few seasonnaires dancing hard on the Smithy's tables to DJ Northey... The Crystal Nannies have taken quite a fancy to Mr Northey, who could be found hiding in his DJ booth for most of the evening! Very funny sightseeing 12 women trying desperately to get a very scared man of 6'4 over the other side of the bar!

Next week (well now this week!) see's a Grannies and Grandad's fancy dress night in Smithy's on Tuesday evening (should be interesting!) and Bluefunkt play there for the first time in a month on Thursday. Gaz and Hands will be playing après ski music in the Underground on Tuesday and Thursday, while on the same day's John and Jez will be doing the same in Sphere Bar.

Enjoy the snow, enjoy the sun, there's only 6 weeks left!

That's all from me folks...
