About Bars & Nightlife in Alpe d'Huez
Alpe d'Huez wouldn't be the resort that it is without a good dose of après-ski to end the day on! There is no shortage of places to go for a few drinks and some live music after a day on the mountain.
Whether you prefer to soak up the last of the afternoon sun with a quiet beer or dance on the tables in your ski boots, Alpe d'Huez has no shortage of great spots where you can amuse yourself when the lifts shut for the day.
Here are a few suggestions:
Sunset & early evening
When the days start to get a bit longer there really is nothing better than sitting outside in Alpe d’Huez and watching the sun go down over the mountains towards Grenoble. Up at the top end of town, at the bottom of the DMC lift system, is Le Taburle Bar and Restaurant which has a massive south facing deck with plenty of tables and deckchairs and it’s literally on the side of the Village blue run, which means you can ski from here down to the lower sections of town even when the lifts have stopped running. Meanwhile down in Les Bergers Le Tremplin Bar and Restaurant also has a huge south facing deck with an abundance of deck chairs just perfect for watching the sun go down from.
For a few early evening drinks the Tiger Bar over in Les Bergers is great for a game of pool and a bit of sport on the TV, whilst in the middle of town a firm favourite with the locals and seasonnaires alike is the FreeRide Bar – and here the action goes on well into the early hours.
After a tough day on slopes (if there is such a thing!) a few apres-ski drinks can be just what the doctor ordered, and there’s plenty of choice here in Alpe d’Huez. There’s no reason to wait to get back down to resort level in order to get the apres-ski party going here in Alpe d’Huez. Perched up at the top of the first station of the Marmottes lift system is the fantastic La Folie Douce bar and restaurant. With a big south facing deck with fantastic views over Alpe d’Huez – you can even see across the valley to Les Deux Alpes – the party gets going here mid-afternoon. La Folie Douce really is a mecca within resort and if you’re struggling to find it simply use your ears, you can generally here the music from any point on the PicBlanc as the day draws to a close. Thanks to our new webcam if you can't be here in person you can watch some of the action from our new webcam.
Up at the top end of the main street (the Avenue Les Jeux) the Sphere Bar is a small English run bar that has live music several afternoons a week - normally between around 4pm and 6pm – always a great atmosphere and with a lovely south facing patio outside to boot, and its central location makes it really easy to walk too and stagger from. Meanwhile down in the old town you will find the more traditionally alpine O’Bar, with a roaring log fire and a great selection of tapas it’s a great spot for a bit of apres-ski banter and warming of those cold toes and fingers. Across the road from the O’Bar is L’Indiana bar which is always busy with skiers given its proximity to the “lobster pot” lift system. Whilst over in the Les Bergers commercial Centre you will find the cosy Bar Chez Leo, a fantastic French family run bar which is a firm favourite with the instructors of the ESF ski school.
Up in the main street area of town there’s always plenty of late night action to be had, with Sphere Bar, FreeRide Bar, Old School, O’Sharkeys and L’Etalon all within 50metres of each other there’s always a great buzz around the area. Meanwhile down towards the old town from the ice rink you will find the legendary Smithys Tavern, now in its 20th season, no night out in Alpe d’Huez is complete without a visit here – with DJ’s and live music until 2am every night its legendary status is well justified. If 2am isn’t late enough for you, then within stumbling distance (literally 25metres!) of Smithys you will find both the Caves Discotheque and Igloo Nightclub where the action continues to around 5am.
Whilst there are no specific wine bars in Alpe d'Huez there are plenty of hotel bars that offer a great selection of wines in some fantastic surroundings. These include the Royal Ours Blanc in the middle of town, the Hotel Christina up towards the DMC lift station and the Hotel Pic Blanc across in Les Bergers.
If live music is your thing then there’s always plenty for you to choose from in Alpe d’Huez. Sphere Bar has live music a couple of nights a week in addition to its late afternoon/early evening apres-ski sets. L’Etalon bar in the middle of town has live music at least one night a week. Meanwhile Smithys Tavern have live music every Thursday evening. The Underground Bar, just down the hill from the leisure centre is always a hot bed for live music as well. Specific information regarding each bars weekly line ups can be easily found by simply looking at any of the numerous information boards around resort, where each of the individual bars will post their weekly programmes and promotions.
Best of the rest
Located below Smithys Tavern is the Zoo Bar, only small in size but big in atmosphere a warm welcome is assured here and you can play pool and darts as well. For something a little more sophisticated then why not try Lounge 21 – located above the Igloo nightclub, its leather sofas and chic interior make for a great ambience. The Eight-Bar in the middle of town next to the ice rink is great for a drink a few games of pool.
