Alpe d'Huez Snow Report
Spring snow & sunshine in Alpe d'Huez : 16th March 2012
The French holidays are now officially over, and things have calmed down somewhat in resort with shorter lift queues and quieter pistes. That’s not to say that Alpe d’Huez has suddenly become a ghost town. I am surprised at how many tourists are still here this week; they had obviously been biding their time, waiting for the last snake like lines of ski schools, to slither off until next winter. Those who are holidaying here this week will benefit from almost non-existent lift queues, a far cry from the past month.

The lack of traffic on the slopes makes up somewhat for the recent lack of snow. Since last week’s brief attempt at snowfall, the skies have been cloud free and crystal clear. Temperatures have again increased, and you would be forgiven for thinking we had already reached summer. Holidaymakers and residents have been enjoying the sunshine, and those smart enough to have packed their swim gear have been taking advantage of the outdoor pool. The resort now seems pleasantly busy with full terraces and the occasional BBQ at the many bars scattered around town.
Whilst very pleasant to bask in, the weather has of course had an effect on ski conditions. Thanks to the heavy dump we received at the beginning of the season, there is still a good covering over most runs in resort. Today there are 119 out of 133 runs open, a far cry from the situation last year. Those that are open are certainly feeling the heat after midday, as snow becomes slushy and heavy, especially lower down. Anyone who's fussy would be best advised to head out first thing, as the pistes are in better condition having cooled down the night before.
With the weather in mind I decided to head up to the glacier yesterday morning to see what conditions were like up top. Having learned from my mistake the previous day, I left the jacket at home and headed out in just a T-shirt in the direction of Marmottes. There are two possible ways of accessing the glacier from Alpe d’Huez: via Marmottes or DMC1. Taking the DMC lift to the second station, you can then take a lift to Pic Blanc, the highest accessible point in the area and the top of the glacier. From here there is access to the runs of the glacier and the world’s longest black run, La Sarenne. You can also access the area from Bergers by taking the three consecutive Marmottes lifts arriving slightly lower down on the glacier. This option is probably best for those not so keen on blacks, as you arrive at the top of some gentle red and blue runs meaning those who are not so confident can also enjoy high altitude skiing.
Arriving at the top of Marmottes three we decided to head down the blue Herpie run. Unsurprisingly the snow was in remarkably better condition and we enjoyed the run so much we decided to take the chairlift back up and do it all over again. There are two blue runs and a red on the glacier, which seems much bigger when you are up there than it does on the piste map, so intermediates should not be put off by the altitude.
After soaking up the views on various descents, we decided to make our way back down to Alpe d’Huez on La Sarenne before it shut for the day. The run is shutting at 1pm at the minute, so anyone wanting to have a go at what is, apparently, the longest black in the world would be best advised to get up there early.
We had clearly chosen the right moment to start heading down, as we slipped through the barriers just as the pisteurs were closing the run for the day. Approaching the run from the bottom of the glacier means that you miss out the hardest section at the top of Pic Blanc, and the rest of the run, although very long, seems more like a red than a black. During the descent, it became obvious why they are closing the run so early, as we dodged patches of grass and exposed rocks. I guess they are trying to keep traffic off the run in the afternoon in a bid to keep the run open for as long as possible in the season.
The last part of the run is VERY flat, and having done it many times before we attempted to keep our speed up before hitting it. This proved slightly more difficult than normal as we manoeuvred between mud and rocks, and any speed we had achieved was promptly counterbalanced by the ensuing slush. Pushing ourselves along the last few km of La Sarenne we promptly took the Chavelet chairlift back over Alpe d’Huez way.
Hungry and eager to continue enjoying the rays, we then headed to local bar and restaurant Rendezvous for a BBQ they had organised outside on their terrace. Having already had the pleasure of enjoying the delicious food they serve up in the restaurant, we were excited about finding out what the BBQ had to offer. We were not to be disappointed as we were treated to a selection of salads and BBQ delights, served with a beer and a smile. It’s a nice place to sit outdoors on a sunny afternoon, and we ended up soaking up the rays late into the day.
The weather is expected to remain the same for the rest of the week, with forecasts suggesting snow as of Monday, although this could obviously change. And if it doesn’t snow, the wonderful weather should make up for it. Those not wanting to spend all day on the slopes will find plenty other activities to keep them amused in the sun.

Half term holidays draw to a close in Alpe d'Huez : 9th March 2012
by Rhona Smith | | published: 9th Mar, 2012With the February holidays drawing to a close, many are breathing a sigh of relief as they look forward to quieter pistes and shorter lift queues. Those who have been lucky enough to holiday here in Alpe d’Huez over the past month have been treated to fabulous conditions and almost wall to wall sunshine. Last week saw temperatures rise and rumours started to circulate that the season was going to finish up the same way as last year i.e. no snow! The effects of the increased temperatures were certainly visible as snow became heavy underfoot, and lower slopes became slushy. ...more
Cross country skiing in Alpe d'Huez : 2nd March 2012
by Rhona Smith | | published: 2nd Mar, 2012This week my report from Alpe d’Huez helped me discover previously unfamiliar pistes when I tried my hand at cross country skiing for the first time. A fully confirmed snow sport enthusiast and traditional Alpine skier, I had no idea what to expect from cross country skiing. Traditionally seen by many as an old-fashioned sport, cross country skiing has been attracting increasingly younger enthusiasts over the past few years and I was keen to discover why. ...more
Night skiing : 1st March 2012Warm days & milder nights
by Sami Ibrahim | | published: 1st Mar, 2012Snowfall in Alpe D’Huez this February left something to be desired, but after the amazing snowfall of December and January we have had a solid base to play on. A bitterly cold snap followed during the start of February and, as a result, the warmer than average temperatures we have experienced in the last week or so have been quite welcome - wall to wall sunshine in typical Alpe D’Huez fashion and a chance to work on your goggle tan. With the extensive early season base, the pistes have been holding up fairly well but one side effect of the temperatures being above average for the time of year is that the snow becomes chopped up and very heavy by about lunch time. A nice cushion when you take a tumble but also a slower surface to ride on which isn’t always desirable. Suddenly, I had a plan… ...more
Snowparks of Alpe D’Huez : 27th February 2012
by Sami Ibrahim | | published: 27th Feb, 2012There are two snow parks in the resort, one in Montfrais and a larger one beside the beginner runs above 1800, most easily accessed from the DMC 1st station. Although this park is larger in size it is very beginner friendly with a number of small features providing a gentle introduction to park riding. ...more
Enjoying the calm of Vaujany : 24th February 2012
by Rhona Smith | | published: 24th Feb, 2012It is the second of the four week holiday period here in Alpe d’Huez, as I was kindly reminded when heading towards the slopes with a friend (here on hoiliday!), on Wednesday morning. The February holidays in France are staggered over a period of four weeks, so that not all regions are on holiday at the same time. The result is that each week here in resort sees the arrival of new holidaymakers from different regions in France. This week and next week will be amongst the busiest of the season, as two major regions are on holiday at the same time. ...more
The early bird catches the worm : 19th February 2012
by Sami Ibrahim | | published: 19th Feb, 2012With the first fresh snow in nearly a week forecast I decided to get up early on Sunday morning in an attempt to beat the high season crowds for some first tracks. Opening my curtains I was greeted with clear blue sky which further heightened my anticipation. Setting out I immediately noticed the ground did not bear any evidence of a recent snowfall – unfortunately. Double checking the snow forecast 5cm was due to fall throughout the day on Sunday, heaviest in the afternoon, so I went ahead with a revised plan of enjoying the clear sky and sunshine before the weather moved in and visibility was reduced. ...more
Avoiding the crowds in Auris en Oisans : 16th February 2012
by Rhona Smith | | published: 16th Feb, 2012With the bitterly cold spell seemingly coming to an end, I was as excited about the potential for 'warmer' days on the mountain, as I was about the fact that I would, once again, be able to step foot outside without my hair freezing instantly and turning me, for the duration of my short stroll to work, prematurely grey! ...more
A windy wonderland! : 11th February 2012
by Rhona Smith | | published: 11th Feb, 2012Having been battered by the extreme cold earlier in the week, I was not holding out for a dramatic change in temperature after being woken by the blustering winds in the early hours of the morning. Sufficiently layered up, I set foot outside mid-morning to be challenged; once again; by the elements. ...more
Alpe d'Huez, 'the island in the sun' : 9th February 2012
by Sami Ibrahim | | published: 9th Feb, 2012L'ile au soleil or ‘island in the sun'. Alpe D'Huez boasts more than 300 days of sunshine a year - from the time I've spent here this season I can tell you that's no lie. Since our last heavy snowfall of around 25cms on the 1st of Feb the resort has enjoyed settled weather with wall to wall sunshine, low winds, and even lower temperatures. Perfect firm pistes combined with sub-zero temperatures keeping the powder off piste fresh and dry. A warning to wrap up warm as earlier this week the maximum temperature one afternoon was a chilly -16 degrees Celsius. ...more
Fabulous conditions : 6th February 2012and very, very cold!
by Vickie Allen | | published: 6th Feb, 2012Over the weekend, temperatures in the resort of Alpe d'Huez fell to -22ºC. This is significantly lower than we're used to and with reports of temperatures as low as -40ºC at Pic Blanc (3330m) yesterday, I really wasn't expecting to get on the hill today. However, the sun has been gradually overpowering the freezing mist and feeling its warmth this morning was a welcome relief... and there was a queue to get the skis out! ...more

Blue skies and sunshine : 11th January 2012
by Peter Dewbery | | published: 13th Jan, 2012It’s still glorious blue skies and sunshine here in Alpe d’Huez, and I couldn’t have picked a better week to be here. Although this is traditionally one of the quieter weeks of the winter season, with the perfect conditions we are having and the huge snowfall at the end of last week, it surprises me that the slopes have been so deserted. ...more
Wall to wall sunshine forecast for the week : 9th January 2012
by Peter Dewbery | | published: 9th Jan, 2012What a couple of days in Alpe d’Huez! After arriving much later then anticipated on Friday evening, myself and the girlfriend had just enough time for a few quick hellos around town to catch up on the gossip. However, there was only one topic on the tip of everyone’s tongues and that was the mammoth amount of snow that had fallen over the past week. There are plenty of ex-pats around the town who have been living their lives up the mountain for up to and over the last 15 years and every one that I spoke to could not remember snowfall like it! Although this was causing a few problems when it came to getting up or down the mountain (as I found out!) it does mean the conditions are spectacular. Up until this point it seemed most people felt that although the snowfall for the season was good, there hadn’t been a huge number of clear days to get up the hill to enjoy it. ...more
Looking forward to a fun filled week in Alpe d'Huez : 7th January 2012
by Peter Dewbery | | published: 7th Jan, 2012Hello, once again, from (almost) the Southern French alps. My name is Pete and I was the resort reporter here in Alpe d’Huez last season. It gives me great pleasure to say that I am here as a guest reporter this week. Although I am not spending the season here this year (I have finally decided the time is right to grow up and get a real job), the moment I had booked my flights I sent an e-mail to the wonderful people here at alpedhueznet.com to see if they wouldn’t mind me scribbling down my thoughts, one last time. ...more
Winter has well and truly arrived! : 19th December 2011And more snow predicted
by Vickie Allen | | published: 19th Dec, 2011After a long and sunny autumn that saw bare mountains and grassy hillsides, winter has well and truly arrived in Alpe d'Huez. The trees are now loaded with a thick coating of snow and the car parks are filled with huge white lumps, only identifiable as cars by the odd visible wing mirror or windscreen wiper. ...more

Fresh snow falls in the Alps : 24th October
by Amy Neville-Eliot | Ski Editor | published: 24th Oct, 2011On Thursday of last week, many of us in the Alps woke up to views of white mountains. This was the third fall in a month, with snow first reported on 19th September. It fell again, relatively low this time, during the weekend of the 8th and 9th October. And there is more snow forecast in Alpe d'Huez for the early part of this week. ...more
