High Avalanche Risk in the Alps After Recent Snowfall and High Winds

High winds after heavy snow = high risk of avalanches

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Alpe d'Huez Editor Updated

The avalanche risk has been set to 3-4 out of 5, as security services are predicting lots of wind slab will have formed with wind affecting the weekend's heavy snow fall.

*Ski tourers, Snow-shoers, Skiers and snowboarders are advised to take note of the flags at each individual ski area, with yellow and black check denoting 3-4/5 risk. If you're even considering trying off piste, be prepared with the necessary avalanche equipment (probe, shovel, transceiver) and know how to use them.

*The safety advice at the moment is to stay on piste wherever possible.

Alternatively book a mountain guide or go with a ski school or private instructor who will be able to impart more information.
